Marxist Gramophones is a study and reworking of material for my projected opera about the life of Leon Trotsky. Of course, it was never finished (or started).  This piece for solo cello is all that remains of the project.

Workers to the factory.
It was 12 o'clock time for a revolution.
I am exile.
I left on a rocket but arrived on a train.
Disseminate the urgency of deception,
my fist of revolution is not stale.
Stalin, my eulogy is red.
Stalin, red wheat is black oblivion.
Stalin, you rode the burning tricycle
circumnavigated the circle - the Moscow square.
I swept cockroaches from the words of Marx to find prison.
An iron curtain eviscerates dusk.
I hid for twenty years behind the trees -
the grenades were in the leaves.
The fields are white but rust too soon.
I remember the guard decapitated in the spring
when I and death were young.
My speeches were shy then, now my window is violent!
It was not all done at once.
Arrest.
I struggle for a rocket.
